One of our state parks has been closed because it’s likely to get flooded this weekend.
Big Lake State Park in the northwest corner of Missouri is the state’s biggest remaining oxbow lake. The lake used to be a loop in the Missouri River before the river changed course. This is the second straight year of flooding for the park, the third time in the last five years.
State parks director Bill Bryan says repeated flooding has forced the parks division to re-appraise the park and how to make its rehabilitation less expensive.
He says employees are taking advantage of the time they have before the levee is topped to remove equipment that can be removed. He says residents of the nearby little town of Big Lake also are moving out again.
