It took Royals DH Billy Butler 586 games and over 2,400 trips to the plate before he finally delivered his first walk off hit of his career and even that was delayed. Butler hit a fly ball behind the outfield padding in left-center field and bounced back into play, and the umpires initially ruled it a double before video showed it to be a home run as the Royals topped the L.A. Angels 2-0.

The Angels were shut out, but they had their opportunities loading the bases twice, but they were unable to push across any runs.

The first opportunity came when the Angels loaded the bases with no outs in the third inning off Royals starter Felipe Paulino. Paulino made his first start of the season after 19 relief appearances, and held the Angels to four singles over five innings, striking out four without an issuing a walk. One of those strike outs came in the third when he got Bobby Abreu before a double play killed the threat.

The Royals acquired Paulino last week from the Colorado Rockies, who had designated him for assignment. Paulino has thrown 9 1/3 scoreless innings and given up five hits, while striking out seven and walking none in his first two appearances with Kansas City.

The Angels loaded the bases again in the eighth, as the Royals used four pitchers to work out of that jam. The Angels loaded the bases in the eighth when the Royals used four pitchers, but Alcides Escobar made a diving stop to his right of Alberto Callaspo’s hit to the edge of the outfield grass. He then threw him out at first to end the inning.
