Mazzaro sets MLB record, then gets sent down to the minors (AUDIO)

May 17, 2011 By Bill Pollock

Well, the first month and a half was kind of fun Royals fans. Now the reality is setting. The Royals don’t have much pitching. Vin Mazzaro set a major league record by giving up 14 runs in 2.1 innings as the Indians beat the Royals 19-1.

According to STATS LLC, which has stats since 1919, no pitcher has ever given up 14 runs in fewer innings than Mazzaro. After setting his record, the club promptly sent him back to the minors.

More bad news on the pitching front. After walking the bases loaded in the first inning, Kyle Davies was lifted and will now have an MRI done for soreness in his right front shoulder.

Cleveland’s big inning came in the fourth when they scored 10 runs off Mazzaro when they sent 13 batters to the plate with seven hits and two walks.

Royals postgame comments

Mazzaro says the 14 runs were because of erratic control…ya think? Clevelands’ Travis Hafner says Mazzaro was put in a tough spot and the Indians were scoring so much, Matt LaPorta didn’t even realize what the score was.
