Royals squander chances in loss to Yanks

May 11, 2011 By Bill Pollock

Base running blunders cost the Royals. Twice the Royals ran into out in the third getting caught in the base path and they left the bases loaded in the seventh and didn’t take advantage of many scoring opportunities in a 3-1 loss to the Yankees. The lone run came off a Melky Cabrera home run. Derek Jeter with an RBI, and Alex Rodriquez picked up two in the bottom of the fifth.

Kyle Davies fell to 1-5, but he pitched well walking just one and allowing seven hits in five innings. He also struck out three. Four Yankee pitchers combined to allow seven hits, but the Royals only had two runners in the last three innings.

The Royals had to place their best starter pitcher so far, Bruce Chen, on the 15 day DL with a left lat strain. They’ve called up pitcher Vin Mazarro who will start tonight against the Yankees. Mazarro is the pitcher the Royals go in the David DeJesus trade.
