Gachkar selected for special teams play

May 2, 2011 By Bill Pollock

Former Missouri Tiger linebacker Andrew Gachkar was chosen by the San Diego Chargers with the 31st pick of the seventh round (234th out of 254 picks).

Gachkar, 6’3, 230 pounds, emerged as a leader on the Tigers’ defense where he made 84 tackles, 8 1/2 for a loss, two forced fumbles, two interceptions and a sack to earn first-team All Big 12 Conference honors.

The Chargers think he’s a great special teams player and he’ll try to settle into an inside linebacker position. Gachkar joins Aldon Smith (8th overall) and Blaine Gabbert (10th overall) as Tigers selected in the draft.

Former Tigers Kevin Rutland and Carl Gettis, cornerbacks, center Tim Barnes, and safety Jarrell Harrison went undrafted, but could still sign free agent contracts.
