Poplar Bluff levee faces ‘catastrophic failure’

April 25, 2011 By Jessica Machetta

Police are going house to house in part of Southeast Missouri’s Poplar Bluff, ordering people to evacuate.

Authorities say the levee on the Black River is expected to breach, calling it an imminent “catastrophic failure.”

About 250 to 300 people are affected by the evacuation order … others are being asked to closely monitor conditions as more rain is expected to fall. The Black River is more than four feet over flood stage and rising, forecasters say.

A Red Cross shelter has been opened and his housing about 25 people right now; about 1,000 residents are expected to be affected.
