One of Kansas City’s charter schools is closing, with officials blaming “devastating national budget cuts for public education.” The Tolbert Preparatory Academy also has suffered from low enrollment numbers that have failed to generate adequate revenue.

Tolbert is sponsored by the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Charter schools are independent public schools sponsored by higher education institutions. They’re allowed only in Missouri’s two biggest cities.
