The state senate has started overhauling the state’s economic development program….with an eye to putting limits on tax credits. Part of the bill is the Nixon adminsitration’s “Compete Missouri” program—-which finds favor with the bill’s cosponsor, Brad Lager of Maryville.

Supporters of a proposal in the senate say the plan makes the process more accountable and more job-productive. But Joplin Senator Ron Richard, a supporter, says there will continue to be winners and losers with the new plans.

Tax credits let businesses keep part of their taxes and use the money to create jobs. Lawmakers have questioned for years whether the state is getting its money’s worth from those tax credits.
