The Royals needed some experience with calling a game from behind the plate, so the Royals went out and acquired veteran catcher Matt Treanor from the Texas Rangers for cash.

Treanor, reported to the Royals immediately from the Rangers’ camp, which is just across the way at the Surprise complex and he started Monday’s game against Milwaukee, handling pitcher Kyle Davies.

The Royals needed a veteran with Jason Kendall still recovering from right shoulder surgery. The team wasn’t ready to rely on Brayan Pena and Lucas May as their two catchers to handle the pitchers. Then Treanor became available for what Yost said would be a “part-time” role.

Treanor was originally drafted by the Royals in fourth round of the 1994 draft.
