There are no Missouri colleges left in the NAIA national championships. At the women’s tournament down in Jackson, TN, William Woods University lost to Westminster Utah Friday night 49-40. It was the Owls first time in the second round. At the men’s championships in Kansas City, Evangel lost 102-62 to #2 Concordia, California. It’s the first time a team has given up more than 100 points since 2008. Lindenwood University missed their first 11 shots of the game and lost to #3 Mountain State West Virginia 84-67.

No. 2 seed Concordia University (Calif.) earned its way into the round of eight of the NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship with a 102-62 victory Friday against No. 15 Evangel University (Mo.) at Municipal Auditorium.

Concordia controlled the tempo from the opening tip as the Eagles built a 30-15 lead in the first nine minutes of play. Thirteen of Concordia’s first 30 points were scored by Johnson. Concordia pushed its lead to as many as 30 points en route to a 64-35 advantage at the break. The Eagles shot a tournament-high 71.4 percent (20-of-28) from the floor, including a 5-for-5 effort from Johnson.

This was the first trip to the second round for the Evangel Crusaders … the 102 points that the Crusaders gave up was the first time the team has surrendered 100 points since 2008

# 3 Mountain State, West Virginia, won 84-67 over unseeded Lindenwood University (Mo.) at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo. Clinging to a one-point lead with just under 12 minutes to play, Mountain State reeled off 12 consecutive points to build a double-digit lead and move on for the victory. Lindenwood battled back to tie the game on four separate occasions early in the second half, the last coming at 45-45.

After suffering defeat in the second round for the past two seasons, Westminster (Utah) moved into Saturday’s quarterfinals with a 49-40 win over William Woods (Mo.) at the 2011 NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball National Championship Friday in Oman Arena. The Owls exit from their fourth National Championship after advancing to the second round for the first time and wrap up their season with a record of 28-6.

Both teams struggled to find an offensive groove in the first half. Combined they hit just 13-of-60 (.216) field goal attempts and 7-of-32 tries from downtown. William Woods’ Rachel Baker led all-scorers at the break with eight points, but Westminster held a 24-18 lead at halftime. The Griffins held their largest lead at 49-36 following an 8-0 run with 3:23 remaining in the game.
