Former Columbia cop doing time for murder goes back to court

March 18, 2011 By Jessica Machetta

A former Columbia policeman convicted of murdering a University of Missouri student in 2004 is back in the courtroom, looking for a new sentence.

Steven Rios says his lawyer did a bad job in 2008. This is his third time in court for the murder of student Jesse Valencia. His first conviction was thrown out on appeal. He was convicted a second time in 2008 and has been doing time in a South Dakota prison.
