The United States Geological Survey thinks the aquifer beneath Springfield will drop about 60 feet in the next 20 years even if demand on it does not increase.

The USGS says high population increases could cause the aquifer to decline by more than 100 feet south of Springfield. The aquifer is believed to be about 1,000 feet thick.
