St. Louis doctor honored by FBI for calling out Medicare

March 2, 2011 By Jessica Machetta

A St. Louis doctor who blew the whistle on massive Medicare overbilling by one of the nation’s biggest chain of dialysis clinics is being honored twice by the FBI. Information given to the Justice Department by Doctor Steven Bander led to a $350 million dollar settlement with Gambro Healthcare, which had several clinics in Missouri and hundreds nationwide. Federal law gave Bander 25 percent of the settlement–56 million dollars.  He put much of that money into the Bander Center for Medical Business Ethics at St. Louis University.
