Wainwright to have Tommy John surgery (AUDIO)

February 24, 2011 By Bill Pollock

Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright will undergo Tommy John surgery to replace the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. The typical recovery time for a starting pitcher who undergoes the operation is roughly 12-15 months.

GM John Mozeliak on the news of Wainwright

While the club wouldn’t confirm it yesterday, they from General Manager John Mozeliak to manager Tony La Russa, they all said it didn’t look good. Wainwright will have the surgery after meeting with Dr. George Paletta, the team’s head physician, on Wednesday. A second opinion from Dr. Lewis Yocum confirmed Paletta’s findings. Yocum notified the club of his findings on Wednesday evening.
