Former State Rep. Brown released from probation

February 19, 2011 By admin

Former State Representative Steve Brown, a Democrat from Clayton, has been released from probation.

Brown avoided prison time in a 2004 political conspiracy case, because he cooperated with federal authorities investigating allegations filed against then-State Senator Jeff Smith. Brown wore a wire for investigators as they built their case that Smith and Brown lied to federal officials to cover up a smear campaign against St. Louis Congressman Russ Carnahan. Smith lost to Carnahan in the 2004 Democratic primary, despite secretly paying for literature which attempted to undermine Carnahan’s credibility.

Smith served time at a federal prison in Kentucky and recently was released from a hafway house.
