Schools might catch a break on making up the days missed during the blizzard.
It didn’t take long for a bill to be filed in the House that would forgive local school districts for the days missed during the blizzard. It didn’t take long, because the legislature will have to act quickly or school will last well into June for many Missouri schoolchildren.
House Majority Floor Leader Tim Jones (R-Eureka) says the bill caught his attention, because some rural school districts have lost two weeks to snow already this year, days that will have to be made up unless the legislature intervenes.
“I have a feeling that bill, this is just total speculation right now, but I have a feeling it’s going to have some legs on it,” according to Jones.
Bills that forgive snow days are common nearly every year in the legislature, but usually they forgive days for regions particularly hard it. This time, nearly all of Missouri closed down when the blizzard roared into the state.
“This is a statewide bill, I believe, because Rep. Aull recognizes this has been a statewide issue this year. It’s affected, I think, just about every county.” Jones says.
HB 471, sponsored by Rep. Joe Aull (D-Marshall) would forgive school districts for days missed between the 31st of January and the 4th of February, the time period in which the governor declared a state of emergency.
