Former Missouri assistant basketball coach Lee Winfield who worked under Norm Stewart died of colon cancer last Friday on his 64th birthday.

Winfield grew up in the St. Louis area and was a D-II All-American in 1969. He was drafted in the third round of the NBA draft and played seven NBA seasons for Seattle, Buffalo and Kansas City. After his playing day, he became an assistant at Saint Louis University before coming over to coach under Norm Stewart in 1993.

In 1997, he left the coaching staff, but oversaw a program that helped prepare Missouri athletes for life after college. After leaving Mizzou, he stayed involved with basketball, coaching a minor-league basketball team in St. Louis and serving as an assistant at Forest Park Community College.
