Preliminary results of an autopsy disclose that an Airman from Whiteman Air Force Base in Knob Noster, missing for days, died of two gunshot wounds.

Investigators with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department now are trying to determine if the gun used to kill Airman First Class Luis Vazquez was the same Airman Kerby Barbe used to kill himself. The two were both young; Vazquez was 18, Barbe 19. An intensive search began for them when they failed to report for duty. Investigators says Barbe drove Vazquez’ pickup to Texas where he shot himself with an assault rifle January 11th. Searchers found Vazquez’ body January 14th in Knob Noster State Park after searching for several days.

All tests have yet to be completed, but investigators say it doesn’t appear that Vazquez had any drugs or alcohol in his system.
