Mountain lion sighted in St. Louis County

January 21, 2011 By Jessica Machetta

St. Louis County has its first mountain lion sighting since 1994. A stationary wildlife camera in Chesterfield has photographed the cat. The conservation department is checking with the 32 people in Missouri who have permits to keep mountain lions captive to see if it belongs to one of them. Otherwise, the department thinks it was looking for a mate or for new prowling territory.

This is the 13th mountain lion sighting in Missouri since 1994, the third in the last two years. Earlier this year a hunter killed one that was in a tree in northwest Missouri.
