Doctor from Republic gives woman new voice box

January 21, 2011 By Jessica Machetta

A doctor from the southwest Missouri City of Republic has led the surgery team that has performed the world’s second larynx transplant. Dr. Gregory Farwell now works at the University of California-Davis and was the lead surgeon for the operation, which has given a 52-year-old woman a voice box again.

She was able to speak her first words in more than ten years about two weeks after the operation.

Farwell’s mother has told the Springfield News-Leader her son has wanted to be a doctor since he was five-years-old and has dreamed for several years of being involved in transplant medicine.
