The Justice Department accuses Ameren Missouri of violating the Federal Clean Air Act at its power plant in Festus. The lawsuit, 26 pages long, calls the Rush Island plant one of the biggest polluters in the nation.
The EPA says the plant has spewed increased sulfure dioxide emissions for a decade since making modifications at the plant that had not been approved by federal regulators. Ameren refers to the changes as routine maintenance.
