Chiefs shutdown by Chargers

December 12, 2010 By Bill Pollock

For those of you who weren’t sure Matt Cassel was the guy for this Chiefs football team, Sunday was a wakeup call. The San Diego Chargers pulled within one game of the Chiefs for the division lead following a 31-0 win over the Chiefs.

Cassel didn’t travel after having an emergency appendectomy on Wednesday and his backup, Brodie Croyle, completed 7 of 17 passes for 40 yards and was sacked four times in his first start since the 2009 opener. He is now 0-10 as a NFL starter.

Phillip Rivers was 18 of 24 for 226 yards and the Chargers outgained the Chiefs 426 yards to 67. Kansas City had only five first downs. It was San Diego’s first regular-season shutout against the Chiefs and the teams have played since 1960 as original members of the AFL.
