St. Joseph chemical company to pay $150,000 for cleanup

November 15, 2010 By Jessica Machetta

A St. Joseph company has been fined $150,000 to cover the costs associated with a chemical processing plant clean-up.

HPI Products settled with the EPA on a series of alleged violations of state and federal environmental laws.

HPI is a chemical and pesticide manufacturing company.

Company owner William Garvey says he’ll sell his collection of 12 cars and three boats to pay the damages.

Authorities say HPI Products has a long history of enforcement actions taken by EPA Region 7 and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.
