A northwest Missouri judge says a central Missouri man convicted of murdering his mother in 1993 was the victim of over-reaching prosecutors using false evidence and an impaired defense. DeKalb County judge Warren McElwain says Dale Helmig’s conviction was “a fundamental miscarriage of justice.” He’s ordered Helmig released from prison or immediately retried.

One of the prosecutors in the case was Kenny Hulshof, then an assistant attorney general and later a Congressman.
