More charges filed against man accused of smuggling smokes

October 6, 2010 By [email protected]

New charges have been filed against a man already accused of smuggling about 29 million cigarettes from Missouri to Illinois. The new federal charges replace those filed last month that accuse him of paying an undercover investigator more than $4 million for 144 thousand cartons of cigarettes that he took to Illinois and sold. Missouri has the nation’s lowest cigarette tax. Missouri taxes cigarettes at 17 cents per package. Illinois charges 81 cents.
