Cardinals can’t solve Pirates pitching

September 21, 2010 By Bill Pollock

Pittsburgh starter Paul Maholm pitched seven innings allowing single runs in the third and fifth innings. Meanwhile Cardinals starter Jake Westbrook lost to the Pirates for the second time since coming to St. Louis as the Cardinals lost 5-2.

Maholm gave up seven hits while striking out four and walking none. It was his first start without a walk since he beat Houston 9-0 with a three-hitter on July 18. Albert Pujols drove in one of the Cardinals’ runs giving him 109 RBI on the season.

The Pirates, set to lose 100 games, scored three runs in the first inning off Westbrook who needed 41 pitches to get through the inning. Westbrook gave up all five runs and pitched just four innings.
