Gov. Nixon cancels event after student slashes community college dean’s throat (AUDIO)

September 14, 2010 By admin

An incident at a college campus in Kansas City has forced Governor Nixon to cancel an appearance there.

A student wearing a bulletproof vest slashed the throat of the dean at the Metropolitain Community College’s Penn Valley campus this morning. The incident occurred just before Governor Nixon was to speak at the school.

The Dean, a man in his 40’s, is said to have survived the attack. But Kansas City Police say he is in serious condition.

The suspect, a male in his 20’s, was tackled and held by witnesses until police arrived. Onlookers indicate the suspect walked up to the victim unprovoked and cut him. They also say the suspect appeared to be under the influence of drugs.

The Governor was unharmed and the appearance cancelled. Nixon’s spokesman, Scott Holste, says the Governor was never in any danger because he was not even on campus when the incident occured. He says the Governor likely would have begun his speech about 15 minutes later.

We will update this story as more information becomes available.
