The census-taking process is winding down with cleanup work being done.

The door-to-door census takers are done.  The numbers are in.  The tabulations are underway.  State demographer Matt Hesser says now it’s a case of tidying things up with sampling of a small percentage of the forms that were sent in.  He says the visits verify the accuracy of information on the forms to tell the bureau if the census was taken properly.

Seventy-three percent of Missouri households mailed back their returns.  Workers went to those that didn’t..  The bureau also compiled lists of places that serve homeless people to reach those Missourians.

In all, Hesser thinks the entire process went as well as could be expected, even in finding the homeless population.

Some communities will be disappointed when the numbers are announced about the first of the year.  Hesser says the census bureau won’t change the numbers but it might publish an addendum to the final report indicating there might have been a question about the count.
