A person many consider to be a unsung hero of the civil rights movement is being remembered in Kansas City.

John Swomley died at the age of 95.

Swomley was a professor at St. Paul School of Theology in Kansas City. He became an associate of Martin Luther King Junior and helped organize peaceful sit-ins and taught other means of non-violent resistance. A memorial service is planned for Thursday in Kansas City at All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church.
