A rule change made by the National Federation of State High School Association Softball Rules Committee will move the pitching distance from 40 feet to 43 feet beginning for Missouri schools in the 2010-2011 season.

The rule has been debated for a number of years and now the change will effect the game positively (in two aspects I think). The first is it will help better prepare pitchers who are moving onto college where the pitching distance is 43 feet. Second, it will create more offense in the high school game.

I’ve heard of some summer tournaments and leagues outside of high school ball that have been using the 43 foot pitching distance and offense has been on the rise.
