Gov. Nixon is returning to Missouri after visiting with troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The governor’s office reports that Nixon is on his way home after spending a second day in Afghanistan Saturday that included visits with the Missouri National Guard’s 203rd Engineering Battalion as well as a briefing from Maj. Gen. John Campbell, the commanding general of Regional Command-East.
Nixon and four other governors traveled to Iraq and Afghanistan on a military tour sponsored by the Pentagon. The governors made a stop in Germany prior to leaving for home to visit wounded troops being treated at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center.
Nixon paid his respects at a memorial established to honor a Missouri soldier killed in Afghanistan. Members of the 203rd set up the memorial for Sergeant Robert Crow of Kansas City.
Nixon traveled with Gov. Jim Douglas of Vermont, Gov. Deval Patrick of Massachusetts, Gov. Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota and Gov. Mike Rounds of South Dakota. This was Nixon’s second trip to Iraq and Afghanistan.
