The last week has not been great for the St. Louis Cardinals.  The low point came on Wednesday and Thursday as they let leads slip away to Colorado.  All of that might be forgotten as they start the weekend with a 8-0 blowout win over the Astros in Houston.

The Cardinals would get strong performances from the mound and also the plate.  Adam Wainwright would not give up any runs, and only six hits over his eight innings on the mound.  He would strike out four. Wainwright has not surrendered a run over his last three starts, and has not given up a run in 23 1/3 innings of work.

The Redbird bat attack was led by Albert Pujols and Matt Holliday who had each had three RBI’s on the night.  Both would hit two run home runs late in the game. Holliday hit his 15th of the season in the eighth, while Pujols would hit his 21st in the ninth.

With the win and a loss by the Cincinnati Reds, the Cardinals are now two games out of first in the National League Central.

Game two of the series is this evening as Jeff Suppan , still looking for his first win of the season, gets the start.  The Astros will counter with Brett Myers.

Game time is 6:05.
