Adam Wainwright made it just four innings last night in a 5-0 loss at Toronto as the Cardinals were unable to pull off the sweep. Thursday’s short outing ended a streak of 51 starts for Wainwright where he went at least five innings.

Vernon Wells did the most damage hitting two home runs off Wainwright, including a two run shot in the first inning with two outs. Then DH Adam Lind followed Wells wiht a solo homer to left center to give the Jays a 3-0 first inning lead.

Meanwhile the Cardinals were shut out for the seventh time this season as Brandon Morrow went eight innings with eight strikeouts. Manager Tony LaRussa always preaches winning series…take two out of three, but this is the seventh time this season the Cardinals won the first two games, but were unable to complete the sweep.

Cincinnati was off, so the Cardinals lead is half a game while the Royals will be bragging about their 25th anniversary of beating the Cardinals in the World Series this weekend as the two teams begin an interleague series.

Jeff Suppan will start for the Cardinals. Zack Greinke starts for the Royals.
