Chris Carpenter, facing his former team the Toronto Blue Jays went eight innings, allowing just three hits and four walks while striking out seven in a 1-0 win on Wednesday night. Matt Holliday with the game winning RBI, a single in the ninth. Ryan Franklin grabbed his 14th save. Cardinals have won six of their last eight. Carpenter now 2-0 against Toronto. In 17 innings, he’s allowed four hits and struck out 17 Blue Jays.
In the ninth, the Cardinals were facing closer Kevin Gregg. Randy Winn singled with one out and was at first when Brendan Ryan lined out for two outs. Felipe Lopez singled Winn to third and then scored when Matt Holliday reached and pulled a slider into left field to score Winn for the only run.
Blue Jays starter Ricky Romero held the Cardinals scoreless for eight innings as well giving up eight hits. Albert Pujols finished 4 for 5 and Holliday went 2 for 5 to continue his amazing run where he is hitting 13 of 22 (.590 BA) with 11 RBI in his last five games.
