Seattle Mariners’ left-hander Jason Vargas outdueled Cardinals’ rookie lefty Jaime Garcia with 7.2 innings of one run ball as the Mariners get past Cardinals to avoid a sweep at Busch Stadium in St. Louis with a 2-1 win.

Garcia continues to pitch good baseball, he ran into a little bit of a rough patch in the fourth and fifth innings when he gave up four of his five hits on the night and hit a batter, but all the Mariner’s could manage were two runs.

Vargas, was just a bit tougher allowing just one single in the first three innings, but a one out ground rule double by Albert Pujols and a wild pitch moved him to third where he would score on a sac fly by Ryan Ludwick.

The Cardinals remain tied with Cincinnati as Oakland comes in to begin a series with the Cardinals on Friday.
