With Cardinals’ starter Kyle Lohse having forearm surgery and Brad Penny’s injured back not getting much better, it was time for the General Manager John Mozeliak to do something to bolster the Cardinals’ pitching staff. That move appears to be the addition of Jeff Suppan.
Suppan could join the Cardinals this weekened in Arizona after he was released by Milwaukee on Monday. Suppan was 0-2 with a 7.84 ERA for the Brewers in two starts and 13 relief appearances. He was in the final season of a four-year, $42 million deal that was the richest in club history when he signed with Milwaukee on Christmas Eve 2006 after he helped the Cardinals win the World Series.
In three years with the Cardinals, Suppan was 44-26 with a 3.95 ERA for St. Louis in that span, and starred in the ’06 postseason, winning National League Championship Series MVP honors against the Mets and then pitched well in Game 4 of the World Series against the Tigers, in which St. Louis won 5-4.
