Now if the Royals could just give some of this offensive support to Zack Greinke. Brian Bannister won his fifth straight start after the bats gave him a 5-0 lead after the first two innings in a 7-2 win Sunday afternoon at Kaufmann Stadium.

Bannister was backed by a first inning, three run homer from Jose Guillen, his third in 14 at-bats against Detroit starter Jeremey Bonderman. Everyone in the Royals’ batting order got a hit as the Royals pounded out 15 hits. Yuniesky Betancourt had two doubles, a sacrifice fly and two RBIs.

Bannister left to a standing ovation from the 22,240 fans who appreciated his 7.1 innings of work where he gave up two runs on five hits and a walk while striking out five. The Royals should try pitching Bannister during all days. He’s 20-8 in 37 starts under the sun.

The Royals will begin a series on Tuesday in Minnesota where they trail the Twins by 9.5 games, but just one behind Chicago for third place in the division.
