It’s taken seven years for the legislature to let Missourians declare their home a house after the wheels have been taken off.

Today they’re called manufactured homes. Years ago they were known as house trailers. Today they’re so big that they’re hauled one side at a time down the road to the foundation where they are premanently anchored. But under present law they are still considered a motor vehicle–personal property. That causes property tax problems and insurance problems, especially with title insurance.

The legislature has approved a new law saying manufactured homes are no longer vehicles when they’re permanently located. Senator Jane Cunningham, who has been pushing the issue all these years, says the new law will benefit present owners as well as future owners.

The bill is waiting to be signed into law by the Governor. Missouri will be one of the last states to make the change.
