The Cardinal bats were once again very quiet last night as they can only manage six hits against Padres’ starter Jon Garland. St. Louis lost the first game of a six game road trip to San Diego, 1-0.

The story of the game was the pitcher’s duel between Adam Wainwright and Garland. Wainwright was great, as he tied a career high with 12 strikeouts. He would only give up four hits, but one would be a solo home run in the second. This would prove to be the only run in the game.

Garland was better as he would give up just six hits in seven innings of work. He would strike out seven before giving way to the Padres bullpen which would shut down the Cardinals the rest of the way.

The Redbirds did have their chances as they would load the bases in the first and also have runners in scoring position in the second. The only bright spot for the Cards at the plate was Albert Pujols who hit three singles, after not having any hits over the weekend.

Game two of the three game series will be tonight at PETCO Park as Jaime Garcia goes for his fifth win of the season. San Diego will counter with Kevin Corriea.

First pitch tonight is 9:05.
