On May 19th of 2009, the Royals scored four runs off Cleveland’s closer Kerry Wood to win. Last night, exactly one year to the date, the Royals scored five runs off Wood in the ninth to comeback and beat the Indians 8-4. Yuniesky Bentacourt’s bases clearing double helped pad the lead. It was the first time in 24 tries, the Royals have won when trailing after eight innings.

Cleveland tied the game once in the fifth, then again in the sixth after the Royals grabbed a bried 3-2 lead. Then the Indians went up 4-3 in the seventh. In the ninth, the Royals bats woke up.

Mike Aviles tripled to lead off the ninth. David DeJesus hit a tapper to the right side and Wood couldn’t handle it. DeJesus had a single, but Aviles had to hold at third. Billy Butler said after the game he was pretty confident they’d at least tie the game. “Whenever Mike did that, (leadoff triple) I had a sigh of relief because I knew I had confidence going up there that I’d at least get him in,” Butler said.  Butler hit a double into right-center to tie the game. Jose Guillen was called on strikes before Alberto Callaspo was intentionally walked to load the bases. Then  Mitch Maier drew a walk, forcing in a run for a 5-4 lead.  Betancourt fell into an 0-2 hole, then lined a bases clearing double over the centerfielder’s head, clearing the bases.
