Joe Mather came in to pinch run for Matt Holliday in the 9th inning, stole second base and scored on Yadier Molina’s double as the Cardinals won 4-3 after Pittsburgh tied the game in the bottom of the 8th.

It was an incredible slide by Mather.  With two outs, the Pirates pitched out and throw beat Mather just as he began his slide, but he pulled his left arm back and caught by base with his right hand and then leg.  A great call by the ump too.  Check this out.  Ryan Franklin gets the win after blowing the save in the bottom of the 8th when the Pirates tied the game when Ryan Franklin threw a wild pitch with the bases loaded. It was really Franklin’s fault…yes the wild pitch was, but Jason Motte gave up two singles and was lifted for Trever Miller. It looked like the Cardinals would escape trouble when Adam LaRoche and Andrew McCutcheon were both caught off third base on a comebacker to Miller. McCutcheon was out at third and then LaRoche stepped off the base and was tagged. Then Miller hit two batters, setting up Franklin’s wild pitch.

Chris Carpenter got a no-decesion throwing seven innings and allowing two runs. Pirates starter Zach Duke struck out seven in seven innings and gave up three runs, all of them unearned.
