The Royals who optioned Alex Gordon to AAA Omaha are not only hoping he can regain his hitting form in the minors, but they want him to learn to play left field and even a little first base. Manager Trey Hillman said most of his time will be left field.

I look at this as a last ditch chance for the overall number two pick in the 2005 draft to find a way to stick with this ballclub. The Royals have Josh Fields, who is recovering from hip surgery who they expect to be the third basemen of the future and the aging Podsednik in left field. Not only does Gordon need to improve his hitting, but he’s going to need to learn the outfield if he hopes to stick with the Royals.

This to me looks a lot like the next version of the Mark Teahen project where the Royals tried to find a spot of Teahen to give him time to get his hitting down. Instead he was shipped off to Chicago. Gordon was hitting just .194 in the big leagues this year.
