“I’m a falcon!!!” His tweet said it all. Sean Weatherspoon, the Missouri Tiger linebacker was picked 19th overall by the Atlanta Falcons.  It now marks consecutive years that Missouri has a player drafted in the first round as Jeremy Maclin went 19th overall as well last year.

Spoon finished his college career third in Missouri history in career tackles and 10th on the Big 12’s all-time charts.  On a poll on Atlanta Falcons.com , 59% of their fans loved the pick, and 34% like it.

According to MUTigers.com, This marks only the second time in MU history that Tigers have been selected in the first round in consecutive drafts.  The only other such occurrence happened over 40 years ago, when Russ Washington (OT) was the #4 overall pick by San Diego in 1968, followed the next year when Roger Wehrli (DB) was the #19 overall pick in 1969 by St. Louis.

It is the second consecutive draft that the Falcons have chosen a Tiger defender.  In 2009, Atlanta drafted safety William Moore in the second round with the number 55 overall selection of the draft.  Sixteen Tigers have been drafted under Head Coach Gary Pinkel, since he took over as MU’s coach for the 2001 season.
