The St. Louis Rams traded defensive tackle Adam Carriker to the Washington Redskins for an undisclosed draft pick. I wonder if this means anything for the Rams’ draft plans?
General manager Billy Devaney said the team is still holding out a possibility of trading the number one pick but says there is no deal waiting to pop. I was talking with a friend yesterday and I said I wouldn’t be surprised if the Rams took Ndamukong Suh. Now with the trade of Carriker, my hunch may be right.
Think about it, nobody in the NFL was really buying into the hype of Sam Bradford until the Rams held their private workout. All of the sudden, Rams management emerges from the workout singing the praises of Bradford. Amazingly all the talk of whether or not Bradford could take a hit disappeared and he becomes the headline of being a franchise quarterback. Cleveland wants him, Pittsburgh would be willing to trade Ben Roethlisberger to the Rams to get the first pick for him…are you kidding me? If that trade was legit, if I were the Rams I would jump on that in a second. I’d take Roethlisberger, a guy who could take a hit and his two Super Bowl rings, but that won’t happen.
So, one of two things are going to happen on Thursday night. Either the Rams will trade that pick to Cleveland who will take Bradford or the Rams will have the number one pick and they will choose Suh and here’s why.Â
They just cut Marc Bulger. He was a Pro Bowler remember…when he had an offensive line. The Rams do not have an offensive line. No protection, Bulger became hamburger meat the last three years and they got rid of the huge salary because the offensive line is not improving this year. There is no way, they would consider putting a rookie quarterback behind that line when Bradford proved the one hit he took, he got hurt. To me, the obvious choice has to be Suh. He can make an immediate impact on the field not only this year, but down the road and is the best athlete coming into this draft.
The Rams created hype in Bradford in hopes of trading that pick for additional picks down the road. The reason they couldn’t hype Suh is with Gerald McCoy up near the top, teams have two different defensive linemen to choose from. The Rams had to create a “new” hype.
After three months of looking at mock drafts, no one is for sure what is going to happen come Thursday night, but I’m just saying when it’s all said and done, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Rams went back to Suh who many in the beginning thought would be the overall number one pick.
