Ryan Ludwick hit two home runs and Albert Pujols hit his sixth homer of the season, but it wasn’t enough as Kyle Lohse struggled and the bullpen couldn’t pick him up as the Cardinals lost 9-7 to Arizona on Tuesday night.
Each time the Cardinals scored, Arizona answered. Ryan Ludwick hit a two run homer in the first inning off D-Backs starter Dan Haren. The first four D-Backs reached base off Lohse to tie the game at 2-2. In the third, Ludwick and Pujols went deep back to back, but Arizona answered with three in the bottom of the inning thanks to a two out RBI single from Haren. In the fourth, Brendan Ryan hit a two run triple to put the Cards back on top 7-5. In the bottom of the fourth, Lohse got in trouble again. He gave up a lead off single to Stephen Drew and a walk to Justin Upton. On came Mitchell Boggs who got a strikeout before Mark Reynolds hit a three run shot to put Arizona up 8-7. They would add one more run off Kyle McClellan.
After Reynolds walked, he was thrown out at the plate on a great relay from Colby Rasmus to Ryan to Brian Anderson at the plate after Gerardo Parra doubled. However, Parra would score on a Chris Snyder single.
Lohse was charged with seven runs while he gave up eight hits and four walks. His ERA sprouted to 7.31.
