There would be no late inning collapse today by the Royals bullpen. The offense made sure of that. The Royals broke a 3-3 tie in the seventh to win 7-3 and take two out of three from Detroit.
Jose Guillen hit his fifth homer in four games and the 200th of his career. The Royals went on top in the seventh after David DeJesus led off with a walk against and moved to third on a sacrifice and a wild pitch. Billy Butler flied out to right and Magglio Ordonez’s throw beat DeJesus to the plate, but catcher Gerald Laird couldn’t control the throw and lost it when DeJesus came in for the slide. Guillen’s home run provided more insurance. DeJesus drove in two runs earlier in the game with a double in the second inning.
Ordonez gave the Tiger a 1-0 lead on his third home run in the first inning against Kyle Davies who went 6 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out five to get the win.
The Tigers tied the game at 3-3 tie with two runs in the fifth inning thanks to Johnny Damon’s RBI double. It was the 1,000th RBI of his career.
