Jason Motte served up a solo home run to Jonny Gomes to give Cincinnati a 2-1 win and avoid the series sweep by the Cardinals. Both starters, Brad Penny and Bronson Arroyo pitched well. Matt Holliday homered in the seventh. More details are coming.

Jonny Gomes’ solo home run in the bottom of the ninth gave the Reds a 2-1 walk-off victory over the Cardinals.  With one out in the inning, right-hander Jason Motte was called  from the bullpen to face the righty-hitting Gomes. On a 2-2 count, Gomes slugged the ball into the left-field seats and seemed to know immediately that it was going out.

Francisco Cordero pitched a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts to get the victory for Cincinnati, which salvaged the final game of the three-game series after starting the season 0-2. Bronson Arroyo drove in the Reds’ first run with a softly lined two-out RBI single against Cardinals starter Brad Penny in the bottom of the fifth. It was all Penny gave up in seven innings, with six hits, two walks and four strikeouts
