Zack Greinke, in his last start before Opening Day, gave up six runs, five earned on six hits and three walks in 5 1/3 innings in the Royals’ 8-8 tie with the San Diego Padres on Wednesday.   Manager Trey Hillman said that Greinke told him he had trouble getting loose so he let him work up to 94 pitches before taking him out. Greinke finished the Cactus League season with a 3-0 record and 4.29 ERA in five starts. In 21 innings, he gave up 10 earned runs, 17 hits with 14 strikeouts and just five walks.

Chase Headley led off the second with a homer. Will Venable hit a three-run blast as nine Padres batted in the fourth. And Scott Hairston led off the sixth with a solo homer.

The Kansas City Royals announced that right-handed pitcher Blake Wood and first baseman Kila Ka’aihue have been optioned to Triple-A Omaha. In addition, left-handed pitcher Edgar Osuna, the Royals’ 2009 Rule 5 selection, was assigned outright to Class AA NW Arkansas. The Atlanta Braves rejected the Royals return tender of Osuna’s contract and he passed through waivers, thereby allowing the Royals to assign the pitcher to a minor league club within the organization.
