The Cardinals traded Julio Lugo to the Orioles for a player to be named later or cash. Lugo, who came over last season in a trade with Boston was expected to be a utility man this season, but with free agent Felipe Lopez signed in the off season, it made Lugo, expendable.

Lugo is owed $9 million this season and has a $9 million vesting option for 2011, but the Red Sox, who signed him to his current contract during the 2006-07 offseason, are paying the bulk of the contract. Lugo, came over in a trade for Chris Duncan in July.  Lugo said he’s happy to be traded.
