The Cardinals traded Julio Lugo to the Orioles for a player to be named later or cash. Lugo, who came over last season in a trade with Boston was expected to be a utility man this season, but with free agent Felipe Lopez signed in the off season, it made Lugo, expendable.
Lugo is owed $9 million this season and has a $9 million vesting option for 2011, but the Red Sox, who signed him to his current contract during the 2006-07 offseason, are paying the bulk of the contract. Lugo, came over in a trade for Chris Duncan in July. Lugo said he’s happy to be traded.
With Lugo gone, outfielders Allan Craig, Joe Mather and Nick Stavinoha have the team. Listen to Tony LaRussa’s comments on the Lugo trade and keeping those three on the opening day roster.
