Missouri’s delegation in the United States House in Washington has split along party lines on the health care overhaul bill, with one exception. Democrat Ike Skelton remained opposed and was one of 34 Democrats to vote with the Republicans. The bill passed during a rare Sunday session of Congress 219-212.
Skelton, against whom Republicans are launching a strong challenge for his re-election, says the bill does not represent “the right balance” for the people” in his district. Skelton adds Congress now has to “immediately” turn to the two biggest challenges facing the nation: security and increasing the number of jobs.
Skelton says the health care debate has monopolized Congress’ time and energy for too long while the economic downturn has “lingered” and while American troops have been fighting wars.
